Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is a test to measure the brain wave activity that occurs in response to clicks or certain tones. ABR will likely provide more qualitative and quantitative information regarding the function of the auditory nerve and brainstem pathways involved in hearing. It is also non-invasive, easily recordable, not affected by sedation, anesthesia, or age, and the most cost-effective method for diagnosing retrocochlear lesions.

Test process of BERA:-
First of all, BERA can be done without the patient needing to do anything. After the cleaning process electrodes will be placed on the patient’s head and behind the ear during the test. When the examination is done, the patient will be heard various sounds through headphones.
What are the risk factors of BERA?
It performed if a newborn or infant fails the hearing screening test given in the hospital shortly after birth. The BERA test is safe and does not hurt kids as well as adults. 
Important things to remember :-  Some special preparation is required for newborn/child/elderly people. Do not apply kajal, cream oil on face and, keep your child awake during the journey from your home to clinic. During test facial movement not allowed to get a better test result. Hence for children parents are requested to prepare child in such way that during testing children should be in sleeping condition.
